Planning for January 2027? Why Now Is the Right Time to Start Looking for Your Au Pair
January may still feel a long way off, but when it comes to finding the right au pair for your family, the earlier you start, the better.
The beginning of a new school year brings fresh routines, new timetables, new activities, new lifts — and often new pressures for the whole family. Children may be changing grades or schools, afternoon schedules may shift, and parents may be returning to demanding work routines after the holidays.
For many families, January is exactly when they most need reliable support.
It is also one of the busiest times of year for au pair placements.
Why January Becomes So Competitive
January is a natural starting point for both families and au pairs.
Families are reorganising their schedules for the year ahead, while candidates are making decisions about studies, employment, working hours and where they want to commit their time.
This means that many families are looking for au pairs at exactly the same time.
If you leave your search until December — or even the first few weeks of January — you may find yourself making an important decision under unnecessary pressure. Instead of being able to consider the person who is genuinely right for your family, you may find yourself focusing mainly on who happens to be available.
And those are two very different things.
At Au Pair At Home, we have always believed that finding an au pair is not simply about filling a position. It is about finding the right person for your children, your home and your family dynamic.
Before You Start Looking, Think About What Your Family Really Needs
One of the greatest advantages of starting your search early is that it gives you time to think properly about the role itself.
Rather than simply saying, “We need an au pair,” it is worth asking:
What are the pressure points in our family day?
Do we mainly need help with school collections and afternoon activities? Is homework becoming stressful? Do our children need someone who is particularly organised and structured, or someone warm and energetic who will engage and connect with them?
How much independence will this person need? Will they be managing several children with different schedules? Do we need someone who can provide academic support as well as general childcare?
And sometimes the answer is that your family needs something more specialised than a traditional au pair.
You may need an Educated Au Pair, a tutor, home educator, learner facilitator, or someone with experience supporting a child with additional support needs, neurodivergence or developmental differences.
Understanding exactly what you need before interviewing candidates makes an enormous difference to the quality of the eventual match.
Starting Earlier Is Not Just About Finding Someone Faster
This is perhaps the most important point.
Starting early is not simply about securing an au pair before everyone else does.
It is about giving yourself the luxury of making a considered choice.
A candidate may have an excellent CV, the right experience and all the practical requirements — but that does not automatically mean they are the right person for your family.
Personality matters.
Communication style matters.
Maturity, warmth, reliability, confidence and the way someone naturally relates to your children all matter.
Every home has its own rhythm and every family has its own dynamic. The right au pair needs to fit comfortably into that environment.
When you begin the process early, you have time to meet suitable candidates, consider how each one might fit into your family, speak to references, involve your children where appropriate and make a decision without feeling rushed.
That is where a good placement becomes a great match.
Why We Believe in Thoughtful Matching
Since 1994, Au Pair At Home has worked with families throughout Cape Town and the Western Cape to find the right kind of support for their individual needs.
Our approach has always been personal.
We do not believe in simply sending families a large selection of CVs and leaving them to work it out themselves.
We take time to understand your children, your routines, your practical requirements and the wider family dynamic. We personally interview our candidates, check their experience and references, and introduce families to carefully selected people we believe could genuinely be a good fit.
Because an au pair becomes part of your family's everyday life.
They are there during school runs, homework, tired afternoons, activities, sibling disagreements, celebrations and the ordinary moments that make up family life.
Finding the right person matters.
January 2027 Starts Now
If you already know that your family will need an au pair from January 2027, there is no need to wait until the end of the year to begin thinking about it.
Starting now allows you to plan calmly, identify what you genuinely need and give yourself the best opportunity to find someone who is not merely available — but right for your family.
The sooner we understand your family’s needs; the more time we have to help you find the right match.
